Using Insurance or Employer Benefits for Doula Services

Many families are surprised to learn that doula services may be reimbursed through insurance or employer benefits. At Goldenrod Birth and Placenta, we help families in Richmond and surrounding areas access birth and postpartum support—and in many cases, submit the documentation needed for reimbursement.

Some insurance plans, Health Savings Accounts (HSA), Flexible Spending Accounts (FSA), and employer fertility or family wellness benefits (Carrot, Maven, Progyny) may cover:

  • Birth doula support

  • Postpartum doula care

  • Prenatal visits and birth preparation

  • Overnight or daytime postpartum support

While coverage varies by plan, many families have successfully used employer benefits or insurance reimbursement to offset the cost of doula care.

Why More Employers Are Covering Doula Care

Across the U.S., employers and health plans are beginning to recognize the value of doula support during pregnancy, birth, and postpartum recovery.

Research shows that doula care can:

  • Improve birth experiences

  • Provide emotional and physical support during labor

  • Help families adjust to life with a newborn

  • Reduce stress and improve postpartum recovery

Because of these benefits, more workplace health plans now include coverage for pregnancy and postpartum support services.

Who May Qualify for Reimbursement

Eligibility depends on your specific insurance plan or employer benefit. Many programs require:

  • An active insurance policy or employer benefit plan

  • Working with a certified doula (like Goldenrod Birth and Placenta)

  • Submitting documentation such as a superbill or itemized invoices

Depending on your specific plan, the following insurers may offer coverage or reimbursement for doula care. If you're unsure whether your plan includes doula services, check with your HR department or benefits provider:

How the Reimbursement Process Works

1. Contact Goldenrod Birth and Placenta

Start by reaching out through our inquiry form to learn more about birth doula, postpartum doula, or placenta services in Richmond. We’ll talk about your due date, your needs, and what kind of support would best serve your family.

2. Reserve Your Services

Once you decide to move forward, we’ll complete the booking process and secure your spot. After payment, we can provide documentation such as a superbill or itemized invoice that many insurance companies require.

3. Submit Your Documentation

You can then submit your paperwork to your:

  • Insurance provider

  • Employer benefit program (Carrot, Maven, Progyny)

  • HSA or FSA administrator

Every plan has different requirements, but we aim to make the process as simple as possible.

Gift Cards

Friends and family often want to give meaningful gifts during pregnancy but many parents already have plenty of baby clothes and gear. A gift card allows loved ones to contribute toward services that truly support the well being of the parent and baby.

Gift cards can be used toward:

  • Birth doula support

  • Postpartum doula care

  • Placenta encapsulation services

  • Prenatal education or consultations

These can be purchased in flexible amounts and are a thoughtful option for baby showers, holidays, or group gifts. Contact for options.

Add Doula Services to Your Baby Registry

Many families are now choosing to include doula services on their baby registry. Instead of only registering for physical items, parents can ask friends and family to contribute toward care and support during pregnancy and postpartum.
